The Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) is the largest Indian Central Armed Police Force. It is under the supervision from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India. The CRPF's main function is in assisting the State/Union Territory in the conduct of police operations in order to preserve peace and order as well as combat insurgency. It was established under the name of the Crown Representative's Police on 27 July 1939. After Indian Independence, it was renamed its own Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.

Apart from law and order as well as counter-insurgency tasks in addition, the CRPF is playing a increasingly large role in India's general elections. This is especially true for the once-proud state of Jammu as well as Kashmir, Bihar and in the North East, where there is a lot of turmoil and violence. In the elections for Parliament in September 1999 the CRPF played a major role as a security force. Of late, CRPF contingents are also being deployed to UN missions.
